Gorham Bypass
July 31st, 2008The Gorham Bypass is supposed to divert 10,000 cars every day from Gorham Village, which is commonly flooded with traffic. While there will still be at least 25,000 cars going through the village, the Gorham Bypass cut down on a serious problem. The Gorham Bypass intersects with South Street and Route 25, but has a roundabout at Narragansett Street. People who owned homes close to the newly constructed Gorham Bypass were concerned that their houses would be valued less after being so close to the bypass. The Congress greenlighted $15.7 million dollars for the bypass study last summer in a federal transportation bill.
The northern bypass was approved as part of an environmental assessment study, but there is no funding yet, said Town Manager David Cole.
While he had promised that the southern bypass would be built within his lifetime, he said, the northern road is another matter.
“I haven’t made any such promises about the northern route,” he said.
